RE/MIX is an ongoing project that interrogates cultural hybridity, syncretism, and plurality, centering African artists on the continent and in the diaspora. This presentation of RE/MIX is the first in a series that explores the ways in which collage mirrors the social and cultural patchworks that form identity. Collage marries materials that would not otherwise converge. Recontextualized, the materials transcend their original purposes and offer new dialectical possibilities. Likewise, personal and cultural narratives are woven together from what is given, what is found, what is left, and what is remembered. RE/MIX projects begin with a series of discussions between selected artists and curators about assemblage across various media, ranging from quilting traditions to hip-hop and sample-based music. These discussions are followed by periods of production that include moderated discussions between participating artists wherein concepts and works-in-progress are shared and reviewed.
For this inaugural iteration of RE/MIX, Tanzanian artists Liberatha Alibalio (b. 1994) and Marryam Moma (b. 1984) had discussions over the course of a year, resulting in reflective and deeply personal work that engages textiles to explore family lineages.
